[Important] Discontinuation of Regular Use of keio.jp Phone Authentication (Voice/SMS) and Request to Migrate to Passkeys and Other Methods
To enhance security, keio.jp is reviewing the daily use of "Phone (SMS/Voice)" in multi-factor authentication (MFA) and requesting a migration to more secure and convenient "Passkeys (biometric authentication)".
[Important] Reviewing the use of phone authentication (SMS/Voice) in keio.jp MFA and request for migration to Passkeys, etc.
・For Students (On-campus programs)
・For Faculty and Staff
Based on the above, phone authentication (Voice/SMS) for regular sign-in *1 will be discontinued on the following dates depending on your status:
- Students (on-campus programs): Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 09:00 JST
- Faculty and staff: Monday, November 30, 2026, at 18:00 JST
1 When signing in to keio.jp via a browser, you will no longer be able to use phone (Voice/SMS) as an authentication factor in combination with your password. However, it can still be used for recovery purposes when accessing the MFA settings page.
Students (on-campus programs) and faculty/staff currently using only phone authentication must add a factor other than phone and switch their regular authentication method by their respective deadlines above.
Please note that even after leaving the university (e.g., graduation or retirement), MFA settings from your time as an active member will remain valid. However, due to system policies, phone (SMS/Voice) factors may become unavailable after your departure. To prevent future sign-in issues, please take action while you are still an active member.
Why is phone authentication being discontinued?
- Security Risk: SMS authentication is globally recognized as vulnerable to security threats such as the theft of authentication codes and "interception of communications" leading to unauthorized access.
- Post-departure Restrictions: To protect accounts after graduation, retirement, or resignation, phone authentication may be disabled.
Recommended Methods (Usage Scenarios)
-
Regular Use (Recommended)
- Passkeys (Face/Fingerprint recognition), Okta Verify, TOTP (Google Authenticator, etc.)
- Sign in securely and smoothly without entering a password. You can also reset your password using these factors.
-
Emergency Backup
- Phone (Voice/SMS)
- Please keep it registered as a "recovery method" in case of smartphone failure or device change.
