Modification of Rewrite Specifications on the CNS Web Server for Public Work Area (7/30)
To protect against recent vulnerability scans and DoS attacks originating from suspicious overseas IP addresses targeting websites, and to reduce the overall processing load on our web servers, we will be modifying a portion of the URL rewriting configuration specifications for our web server.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we take these measures to ensure secure server operations.
Overview
We will modify the configuration of the CNS Web Server for Public Work Area to mitigate server load caused by massive volumes of access requests to non-existent files.
Currently, when attackers repeatedly flood the server with URLs containing non-existent file names, certain websites (such as WordPress) generate error pages for each request. This process consumes significant resources and causes the entire server performance to degrade.
To resolve this issue, we will change the specifications using URL rewriting settings. The web server will verify whether a file actually exists before triggering any backend programs. If the file does not exist, the server will immediately return a "404 Not Found" error.
Target File Extensions
Access requests to files with the following extensions will be subject to the URL rewrite configuration check:
*"robots.txt" is excluded from this restriction.
If an access request matches any of the listed extensions and the target file does not exist within the Public Work Area, the web server will return a 404 error.
Standard websites (HTML files or WordPress) will not be affected by this specification change. However, for websites with highly customized or unconventional configurations, the corresponding pages may become inaccessible (resulting in a 404 error).
