IMAP4 (WebMail) Service
About starting IMAP4 service
Since 25th September 2004, IMAP4 server operation has started officially.
Outline
IMAP4 places message folder on the server, that messages will not be deleted even if hardware of PC is broken. There is an advantage that you can read the same messages from school and home (from different PC). If your settings is to keep messages on the server with POP3, try using IMAP4.
- IMAP4 server name:imap.sfc.keio.ac.jp
- If you want to use this server, you need to register a IMAP4 password. (refer to notification)
- In case you forget or want to change your password, please reset your password.
- If you want to send your mail from outside the campus, please use SMTP-AUTH*2 instead of POP before SMTP*1 (refer to notification)
-
If you read e-mails via POP3 now, you have to set mail environment to use IMAP4 on mailsetup.
- Login => Mail Forwarding => Click a [try IMAP] button. - IMAP4 manages messages completely different from pop.sfc.keio.ac.jp(POP3).
- IMAP4 server will be used by forwarding mails to imap.sfc.keio.ac.jp.
- Messages will be saved on ~/Maildir in IMAP4 server. (saved on the home directory)
Notification
- If you want to use IMAP4, you have to use mail software which has IMAP4 function. Also if you want to send mails from outside of the campus, you have to use mail software which has SMTP-AUTH (SMTP authentication) function.
- About the connecting IMAP4 server
The connection to IMAP4 and SMTP are both restricted as shown below:in use SSL in non-use SSL LOGIN Authentication CRAM-MD5 Authentication LOGIN Authentication CRAM-MD5 Authentication ○ ○ × ○ - Unlike POP3, e-mails are directly saved at the personal home directory. Therefore you will not be able to receive e-mails if with the excess of quota or any other reasons you are unable to write home directory.
- When .procmailrc is placed at home directory (~/.procmailrc), IMAP server will automatically be activate procmail. If you are already using procmail at mail.sfc.keio.ac.jp, you need to re-name .procmailrc, and put forward. At //+mail.sfc.keio.ac.jp, ~/.forward is ignored, but IMAP server will process. Please re-name any ~/.forward file.
How to use IMAP4
- Login mail.sfc.keio.ac.jp with SSH etc.
- Make sure you are not over the quota.
% quota -v
If you are exceeding the quota, you cannot receive emails. Please give enough allowance. - Configure mail environment for IMAP service:
https://itcsecure.sfc.keio.ac.jp/accounts/mail/
IMAP4 Server:
imap.sfc.keio.ac.jp
If specified: use SSL/ port 993
or use CRAM-MD5/ port 143
SMTP Server: smtp.sfc.keio.ac.jp
If you want to send emails from outside of the university, you need to configure to use SMTP-AUTH.
User name and password for SMTP-AUTH is the same for IMAP4.
※~/Maildir is created when the first email is received. If you try to read a mail when no email is received, error message will appear. Please send yourself email and try again.
About WebMail
If you use IMAP4, WebMail is also available. Access the following URL, and enter your login name and password (IMAP/SMTP-AUTH password). You can read your mails on web browser. Please try.

※Important Note for the use of WebMail
The communication pathway is encrypted with SSL, yet whether the terminal you use is trustworthy or not is another issue. You need to be well aware the risks you are taking when you use the terminal from internet cafe and such.
With WebMail, you can attach files up to 2 megabytes (MB) in size.
